In 2018, a Canadian fishing crew discovered a lobster with the Pepsi logo imprinted in one of its claws. This inspired the creation of the seafood artifacts.
This artifact is designed differently compared to the other two. In this piece, I wanted to emphasize and showcase the consequences of plastic pollution and its effects on the sea life.
By 2050, are we going to find more fusion of plastics with sea life?
Unfortunately, plastic does not simply disappear once it reaches the ocean, but rather it breaks down into microplastic. There is evidence that microplastics found in the ocean are being consumed by sea creatures and eventually travel up the food chain and onto our dinner plates.
The Process
The seafood process was the most challenging artifact to create. At the start of the project I wanted to show the effects of plastic pollution on the sea life. In order to communicate that I initially wanted to create a 3D model of a piece of salmon stake infused with plastic. This proved to be difficult for me to achieve, as I could not grasp the 3D modeling software.
I then thought of creating a can of salmon that indicated that it had less plastic infused in it than its competitors. However, I eventually resorted to going back to my original concept of infusing plastic with fish. The only difference was that I was going to purchase a set of fake sushi and oysters instead of creating my own.
I then purchased moldable plastic, which fuses once it cools down to almost any surface. I added some nets and pieces of cans to the pieces of plastic.
In order to display the seafood artifact, I created a 6 pack can holder that is fused and entangled with the pieces of the seafood artifact. I used the laser cutter and heat cut in order to achieve this outcome.
