Inspired by the movie, ‘The Lorax’, I started to wonder if it would be inevitable for us to live in a world so polluted that we would resort to selling and buying bags of fresh air.
It’s easy for us to neglect the importance of air pollution and its impact on society as a whole. Its invisible nature is part of the reason why we simply are not aware of its pollutant presence in our day-to-day. As the old saying goes, out of sight out of mind. However, air pollution is a global issue, 91% of the entire world’s population currently live in places where the air quality exceeds WHO guideline limits.
This means that 9 out of 10 people worldwide are breathing unsafe air. The bag of fresh air was designed as an artifact for the year 2050 as a commentary to reflect the possible outcome of air pollution in the near future. It may seem unrealistic at first glance, to have a product like this being sold in the first place. However, as of now, there are cans of air sold in China from Canada. China is at the top of the World’s deadliest country for outdoor air pollution.

The process of fresh air
The process of creating a bag of fresh air was not as complex as the other artifacts. The method used to create the bag is by stamping a sandwich bag and then sealing it with a bag sealer. Although it is fairly simple, there were a lot of trials and errors when it came to the method of labeling the bag. I tried to use a sharpie at the start of my project to communicate my idea. Then, I tried to screen print on it be it was not a successful attempt. The final method I used was to use a rubber stamp. The design was sent to a local rubber stamp making company where it was custom made.
