Advertisements sell more than just products, they sell values, morals and more importantly, they sell normalcy. Advertising can be traced back to ancient civilizations. However, it became a driving force in the mid-19th century in the booming capitalist economy. Nowadays, we are constantly surrounded by advertisements. Over the past 50 years, there has been an increase in women being sexualized and objectified in ads. Some of the consequences of objectifying women can lead to violence against them as well as low self-esteem, which can often lead to eating disorders. There have been numerous attempts to counteract the objectification of women in the media, notably the guerrilla girls, the award-winning documentary ‘killing us softly” by Jean Kilbourne and the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. In recent times, the public has been able to speak up against some of these ads by complaining directly to those companies. As a direct result, in some cases, the whole campaign or the ads are immediately pulled out.
